Stop and stare

My best friend from Melbourne touched down in Hong Kong yesterday morning and leading up to this (having to map out where I’m going to take her & what I’m going to show her) made me realize that I take my city for granted sometimes. So I spent all of Sunday being a tourist in my own city, doing things like walking my friend through some of the oldest parts of Hong Kong early in the morning as the city slowly wakes up, having dim sum at one of Hong Kong’s iconic hotels and I thought to myself… why don’t I do this shit more often?

Things move so fast in Hong Kong that I often forget to look around me and soak in how lucky I am to be here. I didn’t even ride the Peak Tram until two years ago and worse, I have never been to the giant Buddha. Shameful, no? But having grown up here, I guess my perspective of Hong Kong is a little different compared to those who just stop by to get a glimpse of this little hub that sits in limbo between it’s British past and quietly resisting a Chinese takeover. Having grown up here, you learn to accept this place for what it is and embrace the strange clash of cultures that exists in everything - our attitude, our food, our style, our art and most of all in our architecture. Hong Kong is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world, especially if you look up.

It’s always nice to see things through a fresh pair of eyes.
