There’s such a feeling of detachment in Hong Kong. Nothing sticks around for long whether it’s restaurants, shops, buildings, even - or especially - people. I’ve seen shop fronts with signs that boast “Open since 2003” and while that’s not a mark of an institution in most countries, making it to one year in Hong Kong is kind of a big deal.
I know way more people with fuck buddies than people in relationships because in a city like this, permanence and commitment can be very foreign concepts.
Everything is in a constant state of change and at times it can be overwhelming. I feel like since moving here I’ve been thrown into the process of being desensitized, you know, like how muay thai fighters kill all nerves in their shins so they can fight without feeling. Perhaps the people here have it right, don’t get attached to anything and just move forward free of longing.
The trick is to not become jaded.
